FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Click each question to learn more about Believe Memphis Academy.

+ Why 4th-8th grade?

We believe a structured and consistent learning environment leads to student success. By increasing the critical years of a traditional middle school, we increase and enhance the learning of our scholars to ensure all our scholars leave 8th grade prepared to excel in high school, thrive in college, and lead lives full of opportunity.

+ Why Memphis?

We believe Memphis has the students and teachers who can courageously and deliberately change the world. While Memphis has produced world-changing innovations in music, business, and cuisine, we have historically underperformed in the education of our children - particularly our low-income minority students.

Too often, in Memphis and communities across our nation, demography is closely linked to destiny. We believe an excellent education is a civil rights and social justice issue. Believe Memphis Academy's goal is to ensure that all of our children have the opportunity to reach their potential.

+ How can I enroll my child?

All children living within Memphis city limits can apply to attend our school. As a public charter school, there are no admissions requirements. We accept all learners from any zip code, family income level, previous academic achievement, or identified learning disability.

You can apply to enroll your child in one of our founding classes directly online. If you need help or have further questions, please reach out to our Dean of Families, Sarah Logan Song, at enrollment@believememphisacademy.org or 901.602.6996.

+ What makes your school unique?

We are a public, tuition-free, college-preparatory charter school. Our Mission is to prepare all students to excel in high school, thrive in college, and lead lives full of opportunity. We will achieve our Mission through three priorities:

Great Teaching - We hire, train, and retain the very best teachers to ensure student learning is the number one priority of the school. We know that above all other variables, the quality of the teacher in the classroom determines the success of students. Through teacher preparation, coaching and support, all scholars get the highest quality instruction every day.

Supports for ALL Scholars - To address the unique needs of each of our scholars, we built our daily schedule and academic program to meet their individual needs. On a daily basis, our scholars receive:

• 210 minutes of reading instruction
• 110 minutes of math instruction
• 190 minutes of tutoring and enrichment

Leadership Development - We prepare our students not only with academic knowledge. We also focus on leadership skills to prepare all of our students to be advocates and leaders in their schools and communities.

+ Will you provide transportation?

Yes! We believe that ALL children deserve access to a high-quality education. Therefore, we will provide transportation to ensure we can educate the most amount of families who want to enroll their child in our school. In addition, we will ensure our buses are a extension of our school and ensure that our bus maintains a safe and structured environment for our scholars. If you are interested in your child riding the bus, please indicate so on the registration form, after submitting your scholar's application. Bus monitors ride the buses in the mornings and the afternoons to ensure scholars' safety.

+ What if my child has a sibling not in the age range?

We share the building with Perea Pre-School who has classes for PreK-3 and PreK-4. Perea Elementary school is also in the building with Kindergarten classes that will start in the fall. Believe families have preferential placement in the Perea lottery process. Also if you have a child in another age range, we want to help! Please contact our Dean of Families at slogansong@believememphisacademy.org or call 901.602.6996, and we will make recommendations for schools who share our mission to provide every child with a high-quality education.

+ What is a charter school?

A charter school is a public school. No family living within the Shelby County Schools district pays tuition, and all students - regardless of zip-code, family income, previous achievement, or learning disability - are eligible to attend. Unlike traditional district schools, however, we have autonomy over our budget, our staffing, and curriculum. We can ensure that more of the public funds we receive go directly to the education of our scholars. We have the autonomy to recruit, develop and retain the very best teachers for our school. We have the capacity to build a curriculum that best fits the unique needs of the scholars in our building.

+ Where will you be located?

We will be located in the Klondike Elementary School building (1250 Vollintine Ave, Memphis, TN 38107 ), next to the old Northside High School building. We are so excited to be in the historic Klondike Smokey City community that is rich in tradition and history. We are actively building partnerships with community stakeholders who share our vision for a vibrant and thriving school and community. If you are interested in partnering in our work, please contact our Dean of Families at slogansong@believememphisacademy.org or call 901.602.6996.

+ How can I apply for a position?

We are looking for Mission-aligned, dedicated individuals to make up our founding team. We believe Memphis has the students and teachers who can courageously and deliberately change the world. The world that must be changed is that demography, too often, determines destiny. The world that must be changed is that the civil right to a good and proper education is absent, particularly in community color and inaccessible to low-income families. We believe it can be our children in Memphis, particularly in currently untapped communities, who can be the leaders of that change.
